FCPS is committed to protecting the school system’s students, employees, volunteers, visitors, and assets through effective risk management and claims administration. Our risk management team partners with schools and departments to help identify and reduce risks, provide guidance on insurance-related matters, and support a safe learning and working environment for our entire school community.
When property damage, visitor or student injuries occur, the appropriate reporting forms are to be submitted to the property and liability insurance office so potential claims can be reported in a timely manner. Our staff coordinates claims with several insurance carriers depending on the nature of the claim.
NOTE: Employee injuries/workers compensation claims are covered under a separate policy – see Risk & Safety Management.
REPORTING PROPERTY DAMAGE OR INJURY TO STUDENTS AND NON-SCHOOL PERSONNEL
Schools and offices should report incidents to the property and liability insurance office within 24 hours if it involves:
- FCPS property (building, grounds, playground equipment, computers, musical instruments, windows, etc.)
- Personal property of employees brought to work to be used as an adjunct to employment (instructional materials, tools, items damaged during an assault, etc. – staff should seek approval from their supervisor before bringing in personal items)
- Personal property of students ONLY IF it is in FCPS care, custody, or control (musical instruments, electronic devices, etc. – Example: if a FCPS staff member is holding a personal item that belongs to a student )
- Personal property of a third party (e.g., damage to property of a member of the public including vehicles, fence, windows, etc.)
- Visitor and student injuries during the school/workday or after hour events on FCPS property – visitors should notify the school or office where the injury occurred to complete a report
